High school
holds anti-tobacco initiatives
Radio station visit and luncheon took place on
April 19 & 20
To
generate awareness about the district’s new tobacco policy and encourage
students to stop using the drug, the several anti-tobacco events took
place in late April.
On Thursday, April 19, the radio station KISS FM broadcasted
live from the Commons in the high school during lunch time, promoting
enthusiasm and awareness of the district’s proposed tobacco policy.
The draft of the new tobacco policy was developed as a result of the
district’s membership in the Tobacco-Free Health Schools Coalition. To

Education later this spring.
The high school’s SADD chapter held tobacco trivia and giveaways
during the lunch hour as well, to encourage student awareness and
educate everyone about tobacco use.
On Friday, April 20, the school’s Wellness team and members of SADD hosted a "Cold Turkey Luncheon" for students and staff members who
pledged to quit smoking for the day.
The lunch was donated by Reality Check, a national anti-tobacco
organization. Turkey and sides were offered.
Sandra Vorse, a member of the school’s wellness team, said studies have
shown that if a person can quit for one day, he or she is much more
likely to quit smoking in the next six months.
