Helderbarker writer McKayla-Courtney McGeeney earns scholarships

(May 7, 2012) Makayla-Courtney McGeeney, a senior staff writer for The Helderbarker, has been awarded two journalism related scholarships. The senior at Clayton A. Bouton High School will receive the Gene Robb Scholarship for Journalism, in honor of Eugene Robb, founder of the Albany Times Union. It is a $1,500 scholarship. The second scholarship McGeeney will receive is the AD Club of Albany Scholarship, which is focused more on advertising and communications, and carries a $3,000 award.

McGeeney is a three-year writer for The Helderbarker. She has written news, features, sports, and opinion pieces for the paper, as well as blogging extensively on her own blog, entitled We’re Just Here Pretending. McGeeney plans to study Mass Communications at Maryland’s Salisbury University in the fall.
