Seventh Grade General Music,
taught by Ms. Molly Spooner
Goal:
To give students an appreciation of different kinds
of music and to develop musical skills through hands-on participation.
Textbook:
Share The Music, by McGraw Hill
Supplies:
Notebook, 3-ring binder (1 or 1 ½ inch)
Classroom Expectation:
We ask that all students follow five rules in our
classroom every day:
Failure to follow these rules will result in one or
all of the following: detention, referral to principal, and/or parental
notification.
Evaluation Methods:
Students will earn a number grade based on
participation, tests, homework/classwork, quizzes, and the final exam.
Participation: (30%): Graded each day – plus,
check, minus.
Quizzes/Tests: (25%) This grade includes all
tests or long term projects done in and out of class. This also includes
keyboard quizzes that will occur frequently during class.
Presentation Project (15% during quarter in
which presentation falls) Each student will sign up to research and give
a presentation on a famous musical person (Ex: Beethoven, Andrew Lloyd
Webber, Elvis Presley). Presentations will be dispersed throughout the
school year to allow students to choose a date that is best for their
schedule. Listening journals will not be required the quarter that their
presentation is scheduled. Students will be graded on the following:
Research: (5%) - includes a works cited page
that will be graded on quality of sources.
Written Report: (5%) a 1-2 page biography
that includes the major points highlight in the presentation and
includes a list of sources.
Presentation: (5%) based on information
presented and creativity. I have TONS of ideas to help students!
OR
Listening Journals (15% At the end of each
quarter except the quarter the student has their presentation). Students
will turn in 5 listening journals each quarter. They pick the music, but
at the end of the year must have reviewed 3 classical instrumental
pieces, 3 classical vocal/choral pieces, 2 jazz/blues, 2 musical
theater/opera, and the other 5 are their choice. For each, students must
fill out the journal worksheet and write a 1-2 paragraph review of what
they hear. If help is needed selecting pieces or finding recordings,
they just need to ask!
Classwork: (15%) Any assignments given in
class to be completed for homework if not finished in class.
Final Exam: (15%) Covers all material covered
in quarter.
Absences/Missed Work:
Because most of the work done in general music is
hands-on using classroom instruments, it is imperative that students be
present for class. In the event of an absence, students must make up any
work missed as quickly as possible. They may have time during class to
catch up or may have to come in during home base or after school to make
up missed work.
Extra Help:
I will be available Wednesdays and Thursdays after
school for extra help.
