Sixth Grade General Music, taught by Ms. Molly Spooner

General Music 6 is a continuation of the music curriculum begun in the elementary school with an emphasis on singing, performing, listening, and composing. The curriculum of the class is built around the elements of music. Music appreciation in sixth grade centers around multicultural music, including a unit on world drumming and an introduction to classical music of the Western world. Students are required to bring a 3-ring binder and a 1-subject notebook.

Sixth grade students receive classroom music instruction once every four days. The classes are 40 minutes long and consist of a variety of activities. Students sing, play instruments, compose, listen to music and dance. Many of the listening units will be tied to academic classroom work. There will be units on world music as well as a broad-based survey of Western music as it relates to the various eras they are studying in class. All students will be keeping listening journals that will be collected each quarter by the teacher.

Students will be receiving a letter grade for their music class based on their class work, quizzes and tests, projects and class participation. All students need a notebook, 3 ring binder, their agenda book and a pencil for each class session.
