English 6, World History, taught by Miss Jennifer M. Zeh
Students will begin the year by discussing the
summer reading book, and then reading an additional book by the same
author. Students will read a variety of genres throughout the year and
respond to the literature in many ways, including discussion groups and
book projects. They will focus on listening, writing, speaking, and
thinking skills through classroom practice and the completion of work at
home. The spelling program will consist of words used in other content
areas and common spelling rules and patterns. Writing assignments will
provide grammar and usage practice. Vocabulary enrichment will continue
throughout the year, based on the book being currently read or on a
weekly theme.
Objectives or goals:

fluently in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes and

Reading exams will be announced at least two days in advance.
They will consist of True/False, Multiple Choice, Matching, and/or
Short Answer Questions.
Course Outline:

Vocabulary – words associated with the various
novels read in class and week-long theme based mini units

Spelling – homonyms, patterns, common spelling rules
-
Vocabulary and Spelling will alternate as follows: 2 weeks
Vocabulary, 1 week Spelling, then back to Vocabulary

Grammar – Parts of speech, Sentence structure/sense,
Capitalization, and Punctuation

Literature – Historical Fiction, Realistic Fiction, Poetry,
Mystery, Mythology, and Biography

Writing – Reading Response Journal, Narrative,
Expository, Descriptive, Persuasive, Poetry,
Biography, and Friendly Letter
