English 6, World History, taught by Miss Jennifer M. Zeh

Students will begin the year by discussing the summer reading book, and then reading an additional book by the same author. Students will read a variety of genres throughout the year and respond to the literature in many ways, including discussion groups and book projects. They will focus on listening, writing, speaking, and thinking skills through classroom practice and the completion of work at home. The spelling program will consist of words used in other content areas and common spelling rules and patterns. Writing assignments will provide grammar and usage practice. Vocabulary enrichment will continue throughout the year, based on the book being currently read or on a weekly theme.

Objectives or goals:

  1. Students will extend their abilities to speak fluently in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes and audiences.

  2. Students will extend their abilities to recognize that listening is an active, constructive process.

  3. Students will extend their abilities to recognize that writing is a constructive and recursive process.

  4. Students will extend their abilities to write fluently and confidently for a variety of purposes and audiences, employing appropriate formats.

  5. Students will extend their abilities to recognize that reading is an active, constructive process.

  6. Students will extend their abilities to read fluently and confidently a variety of texts for a variety of purposes.

Supplies:

  • Pens and pencils

  • Pocket Dictionary

  • English binder

  • Dividers

  • English composition book (Reading Response Journal)

Exams:

Reading exams will be announced at least two days in advance. They will consist of True/False, Multiple Choice, Matching, and/or Short Answer Questions.

Course Outline:

  • Vocabulary – words associated with the various novels read in class and week-long theme based mini units

  • Spelling – homonyms, patterns, common spelling rules

  • Vocabulary and Spelling will alternate as follows: 2 weeks Vocabulary, 1 week Spelling, then back to Vocabulary

  • Grammar – Parts of speech, Sentence structure/sense, Capitalization, and Punctuation

  • Literature – Historical Fiction, Realistic Fiction, Poetry, Mystery, Mythology, and Biography

  • Writing – Reading Response Journal, Narrative, Expository, Descriptive, Persuasive, Poetry,
    Biography, and Friendly Letter
