Academic Intervention Services
This is a full-year course that meets every other
day.
The middle school curriculum contains several
programs designed to strengthen basic competency skills and reinforce
the general curriculum. These programs extend academic support and
strive not only to strengthen skills but foster positive self-esteem and
interest in learning.
Similar to the elementary school’s learning lab,
standardized tests and referrals are used to identify students for these
programs in reading, writing and mathematics. These are designated as
AIS subjects on your child’s schedule and meet every other day. Both New
York State and nationally normed tests are used by the district as part
of the assignment criteria. Students are assigned based upon mandates
developed under the Federal Title I Program and the state PSEN (Pupils
with Special Educational Needs) Program.
Here is a brief summary of each of the
Chapter 1/PSEN Programs:
SUPV. READING/WRITING - Focuses on
reading/writing in the content areas, vocabulary comprehension, thinking
and study skills, as well as integration of reading and writing.
Mechanics of writing (capitalization, spelling, punctuation, sentence
structure) and composition development are stressed through
individualized assignments that support students in their academic
classes. Many materials including books, computer software, tapes,
magazines, newspapers and writing logs are used to meet both group and
individual needs. There is a regular communication with content area
teachers to coordinate students’ academic programs. In addition, the
Success Center serves as a resource center for content area teachers.
AIS SCIENCE – support/remediation in the
areas of the science curriculum
AIS ENGLISH – support/remediation in the
areas of the English curriculum
AIS MATH – support/remediation in the areas
of the math curriculum
6/7/8 Resource Room (full year) - Students in
the resource room are classified as in need of special services by the
Special Education Committee (CSE). Remediation in the areas of reading,
writing, spelling, and math is provided. Students are also taught
organizational skills and study skills. As needed, academic support in
the regular academic classes is provided to the students as well.
