Introduction to Occupations

An entrepreneur is defined as a person who
organizes, operates, and assumes the risk for a business venture. This
course will take you through the steps of business ownership using an
online program called Entreskills. Through Entreskills you will learn
how to formulate your own business plan. We will also discuss the
different types of businesses, marketing, legal issues, management,
franchises and much more.
Keyboard for the 21st Century
Grades: 9 12
Prereq: None Credit: .5
Students will develop proper typing skills using the
“Touch Method” of keyboarding. The majority of the course will spend
learning how to type accurately while increasing our speed. Students
will also produce such documents as memos, business letters, unbound
reports and tables.
Computer Applications
Grades: 9 12
Prereq: None Credit: .5
Students will use Microsoft Office applications to
create documents, spreadsheets, databases, and presentations. Extensive
use of the Internet is included in this course.
Personal Finance I
Grades:10-12
Prereq.: None Credit: .5
This course will focus on showing students how to
make sound decisions that lead to responsible financial behavior in
college and throughout their adult lives. This course will cover
personal financial planning, money management, consumer purchasing
strategies, banking, credit and purchasing a home.
Personal Finance II
Grades: 10-12
Prereq.: Personal Finance I Credit: .5
This course will continue to focus on showing
students how to make sound financial decisions. We will cover investing,
stocks, bonds, mutual funds, real estate, insurance, taxes and
retirement planning. Students must take Personal Finance I in order to
take this course.
Accounting/UNIV
Grades: 11 12
Prereq.: None Credit: 1
Students will be introduced to the accounting cycle
using debits and credits. They will complete the financial documents
necessary for entrepreneurs including ledgers, journals, financial
statements and balance sheets. Students will complete subsystems such as
cash receipts, cash payments, purchases, payroll and sales journals.
This course introduces students to the field of accounting. At the
college level, accounting is required of all business majors. Students
may receive University in the High School credit for this course.
Business Law/UNIV
Grades: 11 12
Prereq.: None Credit: 1
This introduction to law course will provide
students with a solid foundation in understanding legal issues related
to business and personal law. At the college level, Business Law is
required of all business majors. We will cover criminal, civil and
contract law. Under criminal and civil law topics such as ethics,
problems in society, tort law, court systems and trial procedures will
be covered. Under contract law topics such as genuine agreement,
capacity, consideration, legality, assignment, delegation and breach of
contract will be covered. We will also discuss current events pertaining
to law. Students may receive University in the High School credit for
this course.
Business Law II
Grades: 11 12
Prereq.: Business Law I Credit: 1
Business Law II continues where Business Law leaves
off. Only students who have taken Business Law and successfully
completed it, may take this course. We will cover law topics such as
Consumer Protection, Buying a Car, Marriage, Divorce, Employment Law,
Leasing and Buying a Home, Wills, Health Care, Hotelkeepers and
Carriers, Insurance, and Personal Property. This course is geared toward
the law and how it affects us as individuals. It is also for those
students who are interested in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement or
becoming a Lawyer.
Marketing
Grades: 10-12
Prereq.: None Credit: .5
A half year course that introduces students to the
important role that marketing plays in our economic system. Content
revolves around the basic marketing functions of financing, risk
management, selling, promotion, pricing, purchasing, marketing,
information management, product/service/idea planning and distribution.
Simulations, projects, teamwork, and leadership activities provide
opportunities for students to develop skills in Marketing.
Career Exploration Internship Program (CEIP)
Grades: 11 12
Prereq.: None Credit: .5
Students attend a 54 hour unpaid internship and 30
class hours to earn credit in CEIP. Students are placed with positive,
professional role models to gain experience in their chosen career.
Students have interned at a wide range of businesses including St.
Peters Hospital, The Albany River Rats, The New York State Legislator
and Channel 13. Internship hours are completed after school or on
weekends. Pass/Fail Grading.
