Nov. 14, 2008 - Following several phases of
construction work, the Voorheesville Central School District’s $5.82
million capital project, approved by voters in September 2006, is nearly
complete.
“We are thrilled with the result of the project,” said Interim
Superintendent Raymond Colucciello. “We will be able to provide our
students with a better learning environment, while also improving the
effectiveness of our school buildings and becoming more cost-efficient.”
About 89 percent of the work addressed heating, ventilation, safety and
accessibility needs at the elementary school, while the remaining pieces
went to improvements at the high school and bus garage. A majority of
the project was completed during the summer of 2007 and 2008 to minimize
the impact on students’ education.
Final phase nearly complete
The elementary school will continue to be a place of learning for
generations with the completion of the third—and—final phase of the
capital project this summer, which constitutes repairing and repointing
the exterior masonry.
Thanks to work that has already been completed, students can cut their
walk to the playground or soccer fields in half by exiting at the rear
of the building through the new handicap accessible entrance and
vestibule, which was reconstructed due to deterioration. The second
floor boys’ and girls’ restrooms have also been reconstructed, and are
now handicap accessible as well.
Additionally, replacement of heating/ventilation systems in the first
floor of the original wing and lower gym, and the replacement of
single-pane windows in the 1963 wing will continue to improve comfort
and efficiency, as did the new heating system installed in fall 2007.
Other improvements made this past summer included the replacement of
asbestos tile on the first floor of the original wing, mitigation of
groundwater and moisture seepage through the foundation into the first
floor courtyard classrooms and reconstruction of the upper level
cafeteria floor.
Sincere appreciation is extended to the Board of Education Facilities
Committee, including Gary Hubert, Jim Coffin and former board member
Richard Brackett.
